Episode Notes

To see you again.

Good morning, Les.

How are you doing? I'm doing OK.

What about you? I'm uh of the plan.

What are you up to? I'm just uh getting ready for Halloween, um, prepping some, some goodies at the door for trick or treaters, getting my costumes ready, that kind of thing.

Halloween, you got big plans for Halloween.

I love Halloween.

Why? Oh jeez, um, I don't know, you know, it's not a real holiday.

I mean, it's not an official holiday like Christmas or Obon or or something like that, Valentine's Day or anything.

Valentine's is as well, not a real holiday, officially.

We don't have a day off.

Yes.

And back home in Canada, we, we didn't have a day off.

You go to school, you go to work, it's just a normal day like any other, but There's such a festive mood to it that even though you're at school, even though you're at work, everyone is, is sort of shining and bubbling and happy, um.

And I don't know, it's, it's costumes.

I'm not like a cosplayer or anything like that, but I love the idea that people can put on costumes once a year and just be a little bit free and have a little bit of fun.

OK, OK.

And I mean, I love Halloween.

I love all holidays, um, but Halloween especially to me is just this really casual.

Organic, it occurs naturally that neighborhoods, communities just have a fun day together.

Right, right.

That's, that's the key.

I, I, I mean, of course I love candy and chocolates and sweets and snacks, and that's great, and kids love that, and that's great, and kids have a great time.

But the kids having such a good time affects all the adults around them.

OK.

Everybody gets into it.

Um, it's just, I don't know, it's just a day of joy for everyone.

I don't think anyone doesn't feel that joy and energy.

Again, same as other holidays that are are joyful, but No, Halloween is just a single day.

And it's, it's, it's just.

Gives me a warm, happy feeling to see everyone enjoying themselves.

I like hearing your description of Halloween, but it's different from what I see with Halloween.

What do you see? I see people who wanna do the scary side of Halloween, more, more, more, and I think the scary side is fun.

I think it's good, healthy, but I think that be a little too far, and I'd like to pull it back to the fun side now that you're talking about.

Yeah, yeah, but I think, you know, the scary side as well, let me tell you a story.

I'll tell you a story.

I've got this, I work at an elementary school.

Right.

And I've got a variety of masks as we talked about in the last video.

Um, I've got some that are more to the scary end and some that are more to the cute end, um.

But the children, I've been at this elementary school for, for many, many years now.

The children know me.

Yes.

And even with the mask on, they know it's me.

Of course.

And the other day, I was wearing quite a scary kind of Frankenstein zombie mask and I walked through, I just walked through the halls.

I didn't stop.

I just walked through the halls, ghosted through the halls, and, and all the kids shrieked and waved at me and yelled my name.

And, but I went by the grade one classes, and the grade one classes, of course, they're the youngest, they don't know me that well.

Right.

I, I don't teach grade one, so they see me around.

They saw me at, you know, ceremonies and stuff, but But anyway, uh, I walked by this classroom as I, as I walked by, I heard one little girl start crying.

Oh.

And I was quite, you know, I, I didn't want that.

I don't want for people to cry.

And about 15 minutes later, she and her teacher came to my, to the teacher's room and came to talk to me, and the little girl said, I cried when I saw you cause I was scared.

Yeah.

But, but I wanted to come tell you that I knew it was you and I was really happy actually, and I'm glad that you did that.

I was just such a, you know, like, wow, the one person who actually cried cause she was scared.

And, and well, she said, I knew it was you and I liked it, and I hope you do it again next year.

OK.

And next year I'll try not to cry.

I mean, that's what came out of her naturally, that, and again, that's The joy of this, this moment.

If it had been any other day of the year, yeah, naturally half the kids cry, but they know it's Halloween.

Right.

And they know there's costumes going on, so it's just, and then.

Yesterday, yesterday.

Yeah, I wore the same costume.

OK.

And I, I went with another teacher, she had a, a big orange pumpkin costume on.

OK, yes.

And we have this decoration at the front of the school with some, some pumpkins and some things, nice decoration the school puts together.

We stood beside that, and we stood still as statues not moving.

Yes.

At lunchtime as the kids were going in and out, and all the kids pointed at us and laughed and giggled and jumped around, none of them were scared.

Right, right.

Um, and, and quite a few of them came over and poked me in the face.

Yes, yes, yes, yes.

And uh, but, you know, it was just, nobody was scared.

Everyone is having a good time and it created a mood, an atmosphere around us that I just find really wonderful.

But again, the same thing, same thing at Christmas, same thing at Hanami uh Fireworks festivals, cherry blossom festivals, it's the same thing this, this festive atmosphere that gets everyone.

Just in such a good happy mood.

Oh, that's a really that's here.

Thank you very much.

The scary part is part of it.

If it wasn't that, it would just be uh a cuddlefest.

Well, I know people like to be scared.

Yeah, and it doesn't have to be too scary, but a little bit of scariness is fun.

That's right.

That's right.

People.

Uh, Speaking of what's spooky.

I better move on.

I gotta figure out a way to scare some of my students today in my Halloween.

OK.

Trick or treat.

See you later.

See you later.
