The real history of a city with Princess name
by Suela
Joinville was founded during the Empire of D. Pedro II, that at that time reinged as emperor of Brazil. He was son of Portugal king , D. Pedro I, the first emperor of Brasil . In 1843 his sister, D. Francisca, got married to François Ferdinand Fhilipe, prince of Joinville, son of France king. As a gift for his sister marriage, D Pedro II donated to her a large area of land which was an uninhabited forest. Years later, after a financial crisis , the French prince decide to sell their lands and the princess agreed with him that it was the better thing to do. Then, they sold almost all lands they had earned as a marriage gift, to a member of Colonization Society of Hamburgo, from Germany. This was a society that organized people that for political, economic, social or personal reasons, wanted to immigrate and settle down in other country, looking for better life conditions. In 1851, almost one year after society had acquired the lands, it had been demarcated and some houses built , arrived here the firsts immigrants , most of them Germans and Swiss, followed by Norwegians. When the pioneers decided to come, they were not tuned in to the such difficulties they would find here. They had to work bravely to cut down the forest and build the village. About seventeen thousand people came from Europe to this region between 1851 and 1888. To pay tribute to the prince it was given his name to the city and built a summer residence to shelter the prince and princess of Joinville, with a way of palm in front of it. Today this house is the National Museum of Immigration and Settling. Even though the city has a prince’s name and is known as “ Land of the Princes” they had never been here. After some years, the village passed from a small agricultural colony to an importante economic polar region. Although Joinville has a French name it was colonized mainly by Germans , and which influence can be seen in its architecture, in local dishes, parties and in its style of life.
