The real history of a city with Princess name

by Suela
(Joinville - SC - Brazil)

Joinville was founded during the Empire of D. Pedro II, that at that time reinged as emperor of Brazil. He was son of Portugal king , D. Pedro I, the first emperor of Brasil . In 1843 his sister, D. Francisca, got married to François Ferdinand Fhilipe, prince of Joinville, son of France king. As a gift for his sister marriage, D Pedro II donated to her a large area of land which was an uninhabited forest. Years later, after a financial crisis , the French prince decide to sell their lands and the princess agreed with him that it was the better thing to do. Then, they sold almost all lands they had earned as a marriage gift, to a member of Colonization Society of Hamburgo, from Germany. This was a society that organized people that for political, economic, social or personal reasons, wanted to immigrate and settle down in other country, looking for better life conditions. In 1851, almost one year after society had acquired the lands, it had been demarcated and some houses built , arrived here the firsts immigrants , most of them Germans and Swiss, followed by Norwegians. When the pioneers decided to come, they were not tuned in to the such difficulties they would find here. They had to work bravely to cut down the forest and build the village. About seventeen thousand people came from Europe to this region between 1851 and 1888. To pay tribute to the prince it was given his name to the city and built a summer residence to shelter the prince and princess of Joinville, with a way of palm in front of it. Today this house is the National Museum of Immigration and Settling. Even though the city has a prince’s name and is known as “ Land of the Princes” they had never been here. After some years, the village passed from a small agricultural colony to an importante economic polar region. Although Joinville has a French name it was colonized mainly by Germans , and which influence can be seen in its architecture, in local dishes, parties and in its style of life.

Here is my edited version:

Joinville was founded during the Empire of D. Pedro II,
who at the time reigned as Emperor of Brazil. He was son of a Portugese king, D. Pedro I, the first Emperor of Brasil.

In 1843 his sister, D. Francisca, got married to François Ferdinand Fhilipe, prince of Joinville, son of a French king.
As a gift for his sister's marriage, D. Pedro II donated to her a large area of land which was an uninhabited forest.

Years later, after a financial crisis, the French prince decide to sell their lands and the princess agreed with him that
it was the better thing to do. Then, they sold almost all the lands they had recieved as a marriage gift, to a member of
the Colonization Society of Hamburgo, from Germany. This was a society that organized people that for political,
economic, social or personal reasons, wanted to immigrate and settle down in another country, looking for better living conditions.

In 1851, almost one year after society acquired the lands, it was demarcated and some houses built,
and the first immigrants arrived here, most of them Germans and Swiss, followed by Norwegians.
When the pioneers decided to come, they were not tuned in to the difficulties they would find here.
They had to work bravely to cut down the forest and build the village. About seventeen thousand people came from Europe to
this region between 1851 and 1888. To pay tribute to the prince his name was given to the city and they built a summer
residence to shelter the prince and princess of Joinville, with palms in front of it.

Today this house is the National Museum of Immigration and Settling. Even though the city has a prince’s name
and is known as “ Land of the Princes”they never went here. After some years, the village passed from a small
agricultural colony to an important economic polar region.

Although Joinville has a French name it was colonized mainly by Germans, whose influence can be seen
in its architecture, local dishes, parties and its style of life.

a little boring
by: Amir M

Dear sir

I think your writing was physical, machanical and emotionless. It cannot catch the reacher's attention up to the end of story. It's a little boring.
But despite of this negative point, your story was power in some aspect i.e. it seems you have powerful vocabulary .

Best Regards

editor's note:
writing in a second language is difficult at best, and capturing the spirit of is very hard indeed. Even most native speakers have not 'found their voice' (myself included)... this often takes years.
I also want to say good work; you have a powerful vocabulary and use it well. Cheers!

Dear Sir
I would like to thank you for the kindness to correct both of my writings. The worse could be discarded. I had forgot to include the fhrasal verbs and I thought I could change it before being edited, as I do in another page.
I have a doubt:
The same sentence you have corrected only the second time.
The first one :"They have never been here".
The second one: you corrected "They never went here"
I thought the first one was correct.
My excuses if I have caused some problem.
Best regards

reply: In fact I was up in the air as to whether I should change it or not. The first time I did not because I don't like to make more changes than are absolutely necessary. the second time, I thought further; a native speaker would use the simple past... it is simpler to say and to understand, and the past perfect are adding meaning that is just not necessary, I believe.
I hope this helps (Also, I do most of the editing at night after my part time job, and second, my business, are finished.. my judgement may not be perfect at that time.... please undestand)
