The City with a Prince's Name

by Suela
(Joinville - SC- Brazil)

Joinville was founded during the Empire of D. Pedro II, that at that time reinged as emperor of Brazil. He was son of Portugal king , D. Pedro I, the first emperor of Brasil . In 1843 his sister, D. Francisca, got married to François Ferdinand Fhilipe, prince of Joinville, son of France king. As a gift for his sister marriage, D Pedro II donated to her a large area of land which was an uninhabited forest. Years later, after a financial crisis , the French prince and pricess sold almost all lands, they had earned as a marriage gift, to a member of Colonization Society of Hamburgo, from Germany. This was a society that organized people that, for political, economic, social or personal reasons, wanted to immigrate to other country, looking for better life conditions. In 1851, almost one year after the society had acquired the lands, it had been demarcated and some houses built , arrived here the firsts immigrants , most of them Germans and Swiss, followed by Norwegians. That pioneers worked bravely to cut down the forest and build the village. About seventeen thousand people came from Europe to this region between 1851 and 1888 . After some years, the village passed from a small agricultural colony to an importante economic polar region. Although Joinville has a French name it was colonized mainly by Germans , and which influence can be seen in its architecture, in local dishes, parties and in its style of life. Even though the city has a prince’s name and be known as “ Land of the Princes” they had never been here.

Here is my edited version:

Joinville was founded during the Empire of D. Pedro II, who
at the time reigned as Emperor of Brazil. He was son of the Portugese king, D. Pedro I, the first Emperor of Brasil.

In 1843 his sister, D. Francisca, got married to Francois Ferdinand Fhilipe, prince of Joinville, son of a French king.
As a gift for his sister's marriage, D Pedro II donated to her a large area of land which was uninhabited forest.
Years later, after a financial crisis, the French prince and princess sold almost all lands that they had recieved as a
marriage gift, to a member of the Colonization Society of Hamburgo, from Germany. This was a society that organized people that,
for political, economic, social or personal reasons, wanted to immigrate to another country, looking for better living conditions.

In 1851, almost one year after the society had acquired the lands, it was demarcated and some houses were built.
The people who arrived here were the firsts immigrants, most of them Germans and Swiss, followed by Norwegians.
The pioneers worked bravely to cut down the forest and build the village.
About seventeen thousand people came from Europe to this region between 1851 and 1888.

After some years, the village passed from a small agricultural colony to an important economic polar region.
Although Joinville has a French name it was colonized mainly by Germans, whose influence can be seen in its architecture,
in local dishes, parties and in its style of life. Even though the city has a prince's name and is known as
“Land of the Princes” they have never been here.
