Practice Toeic Listening

If you don't practice toeic listening before you take the test, you may not do your best.  You can start to practice toeic listening by focusing on the four kinds of questions that are on the test.
They are:

  1. Photographs
  2. Question - Response
  3. Short conversations
  4. Short talk

Here are a few tips for answering questions on each section of the test.

Photographs

This section has photographs to look at as you listen.  You have to decide which answer describes the photograph best. When you practice toeic listening on a practice test, if you do not know the correct answer, you can find it by looking for wrong answers.  these may have
  • words that are incorrect but sound similar to the correct word that should be used.
  • words that are used the wrong way (incorrectly)
  • good words used but the answer is confusing
  • answers that are not completely correct
  • answers that do not refer to the context in the picture
  • words that are used that are related to the picture, but not in it
So first scan the photograph and make your own questions; answer them before the choices begin to play to prepare yourself.  Then listen for the correct answer, and then think next about the possible incorrect answers.  (You may find a clue in words taht are stressed.)

Question - Response

The second section asks questions about a wide range of things.  Listen for words that (again) sound similar but have different meanings.  As you practice toeic listening, remember to check for question words that need sensible answers, and questions with direct yes/no answers.

Short Conversations

This section plays a short dialotgue; then you will be asked about it.  Listen for answers that are:
  1. confusing
  2. have words used the wrong way
  3. words that change the meaning of the entire answer
  4. words that indicate a negative meaning (yet, hardly, etc)
  5. time-words (frequency)

In the third part, you will hear a short dialogue and then be asked a question about what you have heard. You need to use your short-term memory well. This is a valuable skill to work on when you practice toeic listening. The best strategies are to beware of:

  • similar-sounding words
  • inaccurate words
  • confused word order
  • words that change the meaning
  • negative words (hardly, not, etc.)
  • words associated with time (always, never, etc.)

It will help if you can read the question, and possibly even the answers, before you hear the dialogue. Check all the options and don't choose too quickly. Try and picture the speakers and where they are.

Short Talk

In the last section someone will talk about something for a short while and then you will be asked about it.  When you practice toeic listeing, it is always best to read the questions before you listen, to prepare yourself.  This demands good skim reading skills.  In this section, pay attention to details to help you find the correct answer.  Don't linger on questions; when the question is finished, move on to the next question quickly.

Nancy was hired to oversee the technology in the Four Winds Energy Corp. two years ago.  At first she was delighted with the appointment.  Recently however, she has been having headaches everyday and the job stress is very high.

She was told she had to change the office to a paperless office within two years; the reduction in paper use was seen as a way to cut costs.  Since she has been in charge of the office technology, she has seen staff cutbacks recur and this only makes her feel more stress, since she worries that her position might be cutback too.
To help the company save money, she only purchases hardware as needed,.  Last week she took the initiative to order high capacity office servers for their network.  Now she feels they can cancel the contract with their internet provider since she is now managing that within the company.  The servers are extremely durable, and already office paper use has gone down.  Now her staff only prints documents as needed, and do all their editing on the computer.

People are also comlimenting her on the physical changes in the office, since they do not have to move as much and the wireless technology they use makes it very easy to communicate with other staff in their company.

Nancy does not find it hard to stay on top of the latest changes in technology and thqat is the part of the job she loves the most, but yesterday her boss sent her a memo congratulating her on the cost reductions she has brought to the office.  Today is the first day that her headache seems to be getting better; her confidence is also higher and she is looking forward to initiating a few more changes in the office with new technology.
