It was a cold, calm night on the North Atlantic Ocean. The date was April 14th,1912. The giant ocean-liner, Titanic, was steaming toward New York City. Despite reports of ice in the water, the 46,000-ton luxury ship maintained a speed of 23 knots.
Below deck, 2,223 people were ready to Titanic was about to sail into history.
A sudden cry came from the lookout. An iceberg was spotted in the water ahead of Titanic! The crew tried to turn, but it was too
late. The iceberg tore into the right side of the ship. Titanic was going down!
When it was made Titanic was called the safest ship ever built. Some people said, “Not even God himself could sink this ship.”
Yet, two hours and forty minutes after striking the iceberg, Titanic lay at the bottom of the ocean. It was the ship's maiden voyage. Only 706 people survived.
Interest in Titanic has never died. In 1996,a piece of Titanic was raised to the surface. But broken cables sent the piece back to its
resting place 12,600 feet below. In 1997, the movie Titanic was released, and it became the most popular movie ever! Eighty years
after sinking, Titanic is still making history.
