If Daniel hadn't read so many boooks when he was young, he would've spent a lot of money in trainings to be able to do the many things he does now due to the fact that the source of his knowledge has come from books.
He might not have invested money in so many books if his parents hadn't stilled the love of reading in him as a child. It must've been his hobby as a teenager because they hardly ever saw him doing any other thing.
But he says that if he hadn't put into practice all the knowledge that he got from books, it wouldn't have been profitable at all for his professional life. Besides, he might not have retained it for a longer period of time; because all of us have heard: "experience is the teacher of man".
None of his children likes to read. I think Daniel should have this habit in them because a lot of culture can be acquired from reading. He may have thought that it was more valuable to give them the freedom to discover their gifts; but nevertheless, there are values that are good of acquiring regardless of whether they are our gifts or not.
One of his children told him yesterday that the knowledge acquired from books is of abstract nature; that they are the collection of facts and general rules. But he also told himm that the practial experience gives us particular skills and that without this experience, the knowledge gained from books is a collection of useless facts and rules.
He also told him that if he hadn't read so much, he might have reached his goals anyways because he is a very active man and he likes to learn with practice. One of the best examples of the importance of practical experience is learning a foreign language. If he hadn't practiced Japanese during the time he was studying it, he would've left as an exchange student for Japan with a very low level of conversation. He would've had only vocabulary, grammar rules and verbs in his mind.
But without putting this knowledge into practice in real life conversations, writing letters or listening to real speeches, the theoretical knowledge is limited to help us reach our potential in life.
