Listening Comprehension Practice

Use These Two Secrets to Really BOOST Studies

Listening comprehension practice is fundamental to leanr English.  All the big tests start there.  If you can't understand what you hear, you cannot communicate.  So, how can you really improve it?

Practice.

Practice, practice, practice.

As you listen to English, your brain will try to make meaning.  At first, it will make mistakes.  Just be patient.  Your brain doesn't like not understanding.  It will work very hard to understand, and to build meaning.

But your brain won't work hard if there is no need.  You have to constantly give it something to try to understand.  Repeating is great for your brain.  It gets to practice.

You must do lots of listening comprehension practice.

The brain has paths in it.  When you listen, your brain is making a path.  Each time you repeat listening, the path becomes bigger, easier to follow.

                    So keep repeating.

The paths will get bigger and faster, like a road being made into a superhighway.

If you don't understand what you hear, don't mind.  Just accept it, and remember that you will understand if you just keep repeating your listening comprehension practice.

                    Believe.

It will make your studying easier, and the time will go faster.

So now you know the biggest secret to learning English faster.  Practice.

Intervals

The second important secret is spaced repetition.  Listen to a passage, and think about the meaning.

If your listening comprehension practice is too difficult, then read the script, and study any words that you still don't know.  Then listen and read it at the same time.

Take a break.

Listen and read it again, and think about the meaning.  Then put it away.

A day or two later, bring it out again and listen again.  Think about the meaning.  Continue listening and putting it away but each time put it away for longer... one day... two days, then four days... then a week and so on.

This kind of interval training improves your memory a lot.

Read

If you can, read the script while you listen.  Not every time.  Just sometimes.  Especially when you start a new passage.  Then as you listen more times, read it less and less.  This kind of reading helps your brain to make meaning for the passage even as you listen.  When you get more advanced, you may find you need to read less and less, and in fact it is too slow to read.  Then your listening comprehension practice is very working

And don't forget to practice.

                                    Practice.

                                                    Practice.

Joel was a good man, but very proud.  He was especially proud of his gymnastic ability.  A young man, he used to show off by walking on his hands for a long distance.  Four days ago he was run down while he was showing off.  They took him to the hospital and he stayed there for two days but he passed away on the fifth day.  Of course, he will miss out on the summer festival which is coming up, but the worst part was that he left behind a young wife with a 2 year old daughter.  Their lives will never be the same without him.
