Are You Learning English Internet Slang?

I don't like to teach slang.  But if you aren't learning English internet slang you might have trouble learning English when you are online.  There is simply a lot of slang, and if you don't understand it you may feel lost.

I was thankful when I found Nik Peachey's site for English learners. Its great.  On this page I found more information about internet slang.

****Please note that the site he recommends is for adults****

There is a lot of slang that I don't know and I use the internet quite a bit (I built this site)!

Don't spend too much time learning English internet slang. You may be tempted by all the slang words and expressions but not all of them will help you (many of them are acronyms only used typing- not speaking).  My best advice is to visit the site for about ten minutes.  Then go back to your study routine.

Why is slang is difficult for non-native speakers to use properly?  It has many nuances that change in different situations.  It can be strong.  It can be funny but if not used well, it can make people feel bad.   Like a good joke, it requires proper timing.

Of course, if you want to learn it, you have to use it a lot to get better. So use it if you really want to, but plain simple English is usually better.  And be careful not to hurt other people's feelings.  The internet is big but it is getting smaller everyday.  You have a reputation online.  You have to protect it or people may stop communicating with you, or worse, give you a bad reputation.  Be careful when you are learning English internet slang.

Another point to remember is some people (like me!) may not understand the slang you are using.  Really current slang is often known by a small group of internet users.  (I took the test on the slang site just now and I had to guess at most of them!)

When you are learning English internet slang, the simplest advice is:  make the world a better place (don't use slang to appear cool or make people feel bad).

While you are on the internet you can also learn more English using the tips in this e-book.  Click Here!

And have fun!

Excitement is what drives Phil.  He has been capturing and smuggling exotic animals for nearly ten years and he does it as much for the excitement as for the money.  Once he worked with a partner who was very unpredictable.  As they were crossing the border, he told his partner to keep quiet so they don't stand out.  Phil did not have enough money to pay off the border guard.  His partner began to argue with the customs agent and Phil got angry too.  Things were beginning to heat up, and then the guards arrested his partner.  His partner started fighting violently, so Phil just sat down.  They locked up his partner and now that guy is chilling out in jail.  Phil got through safely, and now he is also chilling out... in a bar, sipping cold, tall iced teas.
