When students start to learn English, you have to balance what you think is helpful for them in the long term with immediately useable English. They need to learn what is important. And what is important depends on their level. But let's take a set of beginner students. They are just starting and don't know any English. The things they feel are important become easeir to learn. That English becomes 'theirs'. They own it. And they will use it more. There's a problem.
What is English They Feel is Important?
Students need a way to learn the English they feel is important, but what is important to them? As the teacher, you cannot know everything that is important to them. Often they are not aware of it either. Besides, it changes with time. New moods, new skills, and new life situations l will change the English that is important to the students. So how can you discover it?They Need to Discover English
Don't try to discover what they need. Let them discover it. To help them, students need English that can help them discover more English on their own. On their own does not need to be apart from the teacher. It only means self directed.Maybe they discovered something they want to know while they are in class. They need the language to ask the right question. To ask the teacher to teach that language to them.
To help students make their own questions, we have to teach them basic question words, basic question formats, and a small set of flexible and powerful questions.
Basic Words
Of course they need to learn the basic question words. The five W's are important. Who, what, where, when, and why. Let's add how onto that list to make it complete. These are the basic tools for starting to ask the questions students want to ask. But what about the patterns?Basic Formats
The basic question patterns they need are also important. Of course, this inculdes the patterns using the basic words (the five W's). What is... Where is... Why is... etc. And change the verb to be into to do..to get etc. What do... Where do... Why do... etc. But we have to move on to the more difficult pattern where the verb comes in front: 'Is it...?' This reversal pattern can be used for almost any sentence to make it a question, so teach this in the English for students. But these are just general patterns. Students mightt not realize how to say some important questions.But there are a Few Important Questions
There are a few questions that are just so useful that they make excellent English for students and we can teach them right away. Here are a few examples: What is this? How do you say === in English? What is another word for ===? What was the word you said before==? Can you repeat that? What does === mean?What Other Basic English for Students Can You Add?

3. read over to read something from beginning to end
4. work out to resolve differences or find a way of dealing with a difficulty
5. throw up to vomit the contents of the stomach

After Maris broke off with his girlfriend, he took their daughter with him to a new city. His ex-girlfriend wanted their daughter, and he had to turn her over to the authorities in his new city. He really wanted to keep his daughter. He had to prove that he could take care of her to a social worker. Finally, he worked out an agreement with his ex-girlfriend so that he could have his daughter most of the time. When he did that, they made him read over a contract before he could actually get his daughter again. She had been so sad without him that she would not eat, or she would throw up after eating everytime. Now they are together again and very happy.
