Conference English You Can Use

Conference English vocabulary is the vocabulary used in meetings and conferences and the english used to describe or talk about them.  The list on this page is not a full list.  I encourage you to submit your own words  (below) and I can make short stories using those words for your listening practice.

I have been to many conferences and most of the English is common everyday English.  However, some new words do come up from time to time. These are mostly organization terms, or flow of meetings words, or registration words.

The meetings will be held at a location, sometimes called a venue.  the meetings will often be called sessions, and one special variety is a panel session (or discussion).  Sometimes there will be workshops, which may include participation by the attendees.

Some sessions will have a presenter (they give the content, and control it), and others may only have a facilitator (they may give some content, but also elicit content from other participants).  There may be plenary sessions, and keynote sessions or speeches.

Most conferences have exhibits, and most of these (in my experience) are commercial, but they are also usually very worthwhile.

Here is the conference English vocabulary in the story on this page.

Jeremy is worried.  He has set up a conference for online gamers, and he has a problem.  He expected about 500 attendees.  He set up all the arrangements such as location, sessions, and accomodations based on this number.  The problem is that over 200 people have registered to attend.  He cannot accomodate them all.  He knows it will be overcrowded and he will be penalized by the online gamers association.  Jeremy wanted to get in touch with them to ask for help but they did not respond to his e-mails. Now he thinks maybe he should select people from the register to take part in extra sessions and extend the conference, but this will not fix the problem.  His only solution is to change the place where he holds the conference, and put up lots of signs for people to get there.
Now he is watching nervously as the first day attendees are arriving.
